How to Play
When I created this, it took me time to learn it, and I’m exploring different beats and rhythms. I love musical instruments and have played upwards of thirty different types, but as far as percussion goes, I was and am not great at it. I’m one of those people who hears a song and claps to it out of rhythm lol. It’s fun to learn something new and figure out how it works. I hope this video and information provides you with enough information to get started drumming!
Hold the drum in whatever way feels most comfortable to you. Relax your neck and shoulders.
Goofy Fish Drums by Fish Percussion can be played by placing your mouth ‘lips’ on the back of the drum head and striking the mallet with your finger/s while moving your mouth between vowels A, E, I, O, U.
Keep in mind that although you may not be seeing your mouth move to these vowels, your tongue is, and that’s why you can make different sounds with this instrument. It is played similarly to a jaw harp.
For your first beat practice in this order,
O-A-O-O-A__O-A-O-O-A
Tips:
For further progression practice A, E, I, O, U mouth movements while striking the mallet and/
or fish eye. How your tongue moves with these vowels creates different sounds to experiment with.
Drum roll, please? Wiggle two fingers back and forth to tap the mallet in a quick succession. You can do this with all different types of sounds, or keep it simple as if it were a drum. It’s all up to you and your style!
Buzz on! Slide the buzzer bead towards the mallet head if you’d like to create a buzzing effect. You can do this by tilting your head with the instrument to play more fluently within your beat. You can also move it away from your mouth and tilt the instrument downwards and upwards when you want the buzzer bead not to be in use.
Want a bass sound? Make your mouth an O shape and hit the fish eye mallet with your finger.
For a deeper bass, make an O shape and strike the side of the fish's head near its mouth. You will have to hold the drum more firmly to achieve this.
Fin! With some practice, you’re becoming a PRO Goofy Fish Drummer :)
